My PSA level has risen over recent months while on hormone therapy. I have had MRI, bone and ct scans this week but not had results. Can a different hormone bring the PSA under control? Also what is the likely next treatment ?
Thanks.

Hello and thanks for your post
I'm afraid as nurses here we cannot give a medical opinion or recommend treatments as we are not involved in your care. It is best to ask the specialist team who will be in a better position to discuss this with you when your test results are known.
We have some general information about treatment options if prostate cancer were to come back here that you may wish to take a look at. As you can see in the highlighted link if your current hormone therapy is no longer controlling your cancer, your doctor may suggest a different type of hormone therapy.
Treatment decisions are made on an individual basis according to the stage and extent of your cancer as well as your previous treatments, your general health and fitness levels.
I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Best wishes,
Celene
Hi Johnsy251, and welcome, Can i ask if you have had, or are waiting for a prostate biopsy and when exactly you started your meds and injections and the date of your PSA rise,
Eddie
Hi. I had bioosy when originally diagnosed. Started Firmagon in November 2021 and had 6 rounds of chemo. My Psa started to rise in July 2023. Thanks for your reply.
Hi Johnsy251, Firstly i am not an expert though did 15 years in healthcare/ cancer care. As nurse Celine suggested, hormone therapies often become less effective 18 to 30 months in as the cancer cells adjust to them. I am sure as your MDT will also know of your PSA rise and they will be monitoring and discussing your situation and what treatments will be best for you, I know a lot of people who's HT was changed with very good results but as for you, i would only be guessing, best left to the experts. take care
Eddie
