Does this mean the cancer is spreading

My dad went into hospital for surgery following being diagnosed with oesophagus cancer. He had 4 rounds of chemo and felt the tumour had shrunk as he was able to eat normally.  However when he was opened up for the operation they said the tumour was stuck to the pancreas.  So he needs further chemo then they'll look at doing the op again. Does this mean the cancer is spreading. I assumed the cancer would be inside the oesophagus so how does it stick to the pancreas? Any further information so I have a better understanding would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your dad. This must be a tough time for you all.

It is difficult for us to be very specific as we are not involved in your dad's clinical care. But usually, when the cancer has stuck to another organ ( pancreas) it means that the cancer has spread there. I'm sorry as I realise this may be upsetting to read.

But your dad's specialist team is better placed to advise you more on this as they are familiar with all his medical details. If your dad has a specialist nurse involved in his care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
