Cancer Diagnosis

Hi A lump grew very quickly on the back of my tongue and I was given a 2week referral. At the hospital visit the consultant said it was cancer and it could only be treated with radiotherapy. This was repeated in the follow up letter. I have had a biopsy,MRI and CT since and am waiting for results.

My question is this.

If it is already decided it is cancer I don't understand why no one has been in contact to follow it up. What is the usual process.?

Obviously I am very anxious.

Thanks

  • Hello Raymo and thank you for posting

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate all this waiting around must be unsettling for you.

Even when a cancer is suspected by a doctor through what they can see, further tests are usually needed. Biopsies and scans can confirm what type of cancer it is and it's location and helps the doctors to stage a cancer ( figure out the size and extent of a cancer). This helps to guide treatment plans moving forward.

Once all the test results are in the findings will be discussed with you. Usually patients are also discussed in a multi disciplinary setting where all the different specialist doctors come together to talk through each patient and what the treatment options are.

Hang in there for now, they will be in touch soon, i'm sure. Keep yourself busy in the meantime to help pass the time.

If you haven't heard anything soon or you think you have been left waiting too long, do contact the consultants secretary at the hospital to find out more.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
