Blood transfusion prior to Radium 223

My husband has to have a blood transfusion prior to Radium 223. Has anyone else had this?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is difficult to comment on this as we are not involved involved in your husband's care. His situation  may be very different from other members on the forum. A lot will depend on what his red blood count is.

We have some information about Radium 223. The treatment can effect blood cells after treatment and depending on your husband's haemoglobin level the doctors may want to ensure that his blood count is at an adequate level before treatment. You can read more about Radium 223 on our website  here

It is the red blood cells that are responsible for transporting oxygen around the body and it is important that your husband's blood count is at a good level to get all the benefits from his forth coming treatment particularly as his blood count may well drop after treatment.

You can read more about blood on our website here

I would encourage your husband to discuss this with his team.

If you would like to chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
