Ovarian cyst - spillage of contents during surgery

Hello,

I recently had surgery to remove a complex ovarian cyst. I was told prior to surgery there were some features which may indicate something malignant, but also some features that looked more benign. They had said pre surgery they were attempting keyhole but wanted to avoid bursting the cyst as it wouldn't be good for the contents to go into the pelvis incase it is cancerous - they said they may convert the op to open midway if needed to get it out ok.

So, when I came around from the operation they had done it keyhole, which I was really pleased about. However, the following day on the ward I was seen by the doctor, but it was a different person t the surgeon that did the procedure. He said it says in the notes that some of the cyst contents got spilled into me during the surgery, but that shouldn't cause a problem. I didn't really take it i properly at the time, ️ which is why I'm asking now.

I'm assuming if it turns out to be benign, then it doesn't matter at all.

However, what might the consequences of this be if it is either a borderline cyst or cancerous? Will this spillage mean I need more treatment?

Any advice about this from the nurses or anyone that may have experienced something similar would be very much appreciated.

Thanks you x

  • Hello sunflowergirl123 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing tests for an ovarian cyst and appreciate you having questions.

Unfortunately without being directly involved in your care we are limited in what we can say about your situation as we don't know the finer details about your situation or access to medical records.

I think for now it is best to try and recover as best as you can from the surgery and wait for the results to find out what the cyst pathology results show and go from there.

Only once the results are in will anyone be able to say what needs to happen next. In the worse case scenario that this does turn out to be a malignant ( cancerous) cyst then any need for further treatment taking into consideration all the detail they have about your situation including any spillage will be made and discussed with you.

Sit tight for now and try and keep your mind on other things if you can.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Take care

    Naomi
