Hormone blockers and side effects

I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and my treatment is hopefully going to be mammoplasty followed by radiotherapy and hormone blockers- I don’t know which yet.

I’ve read so much about horrible side effects of hormone blockers, and I’m really worried about how they are going to affect my everyday life. I can’t help wondering how the risks of not taking them compare with the side effects? Does anyone have any data that would help me make a decision about this? I know I will be able to speak with by breast care nurse and doctor about it, but can’t help thinking that they will just be pro the drugs.

Many thanks in advance,

Sue

  • Hello Sue,

    Thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you are having treatment for breast cancer.

While knowing the benefits and risks of any treatment is good, sometimes what we see (online) focuses too much on the risks rather than the benefits. So, while I can't tell you how hormone treatment will affect you, it is not necessarily going to be a difficult time for you. This is because treatment affects people differently, you would have to take the treatment to see how it affects you.

Hormone treatment is a recommended treatment for oestrogen-positive breast cancer as it has been shown in research and clinical trials to reduce the risk of cancer coming back. How much that is for you is best discussed with your breast cancer team, as they have all the information about your clinical situation.

There are different types of hormone treatment, and you will be prescribed the type that is the best for you. You can read more about why hormone treatment is important, how it works, and the effects of each of the different types of hormonal treatment on our website here.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Dear Caroline,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I realise that I have a lot to think about, learn about, and consider. You are absolutely right about hearing/ reading too much regarding side effects, risks etc. I would imagine most people that get on ok with the hormone treatments wouldn’t generally be talking about it online!

    kind regards,

    Sue
