Pain in anal area after radiotherapy

Two months ago my father had radiotherapy on his rectum. He has a stoma so his rectum is not attached to his main bowel. However a few weeks after finishing his radiotherapy he started having a stinging pain in his anal area. I have bought soft cushions for him to sit on and a rubber ring (which isn't recommended but needs must). I have bought many creams etc for him to use such as Savlon, Sudacrem, Bepanthen nappy cream, Anusol, Germaloids, Hydrocortisone 1%, Dermol - all of which have been recommended in online chats or by the GP etc. The GP also prescribed Clobetisone but she can't understand the pain as she says there's no infection, no blistering, no redness and no fissures etc in the area. I'm at my wits end and have just ordered Flamigel which again was recommended but that hasn't arrived. I called the specialist nurse and she suggested continuing with the Dermol but that does nothing. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

  • Hello and thank you for contacting us.

I am so sorry to hear what your dad is going through with pain since his treatment.

It is hard dealing with the constant feeling of discomfort and can impact on everyday life. Sometimes nerves in the anus can be affected by treatment, these pains can need certain medications improve. This may have happened for your dad. I wonder if he has been reviewed by a Macmillan or palliative care team, as they are symptom management specialists in cancer patients. This could be a hospital or community team so do speak to his specialist nurse about this referral or the GP, as it may help him improve his current quality of life.

Macmillan have a page on side effects after pelvic radiotherapy here.

Take care Heidi and if you find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline our number is 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.

  • Apologies for being so late in replying - I meant to reply straight away but something cropped up. Thank you for the information - especially as you mentioned nerves in the area can be affected. The Macmillian info on pelvic radiotherapy is also useful and we will discuss with the specialist. Many thanks again.
