I recently came on here about my husbands possible C diagnosis .

Last week it was confirmed he has stage 3, he is now being referred, this was done on Wed by the Consultant, the Macmillan nurse has said if you haven't heard anything by next Wed, contact me, I will sort it. That aside, when we were told by the consultant, I asked what stage, and treatment available, not sure how I managed that...as the world seemed to stand still...anyway, he said stage 3, and radiotherapy and chemo, but no mention of surgery? Is that normal?

Thank you

  • Hello worrywort100 and thanks for posting,

Cancer treatments are generally tailored to the situation. Although surgery can be used to treat cancers in the head and neck area, for it to be successful all of the cancer has to be removed. Sometimes this can be difficult because of structures very nearby such as important nerves and blood vessels. Radiotherapy often with chemotherapy is a well-established option in the treatment of head and neck cancers so it is normal for this to be a recommended treatment.

I expect your husband's case will be reviewed by the specialist team at the Christie Hospital and hopefully, he will find out more about what they plan soon.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over on Freephone 0808 4040. We are here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
