Cancer treatments are generally tailored to the situation. Although surgery can be used to treat cancers in the head and neck area, for it to be successful all of the cancer has to be removed. Sometimes this can be difficult because of structures very nearby such as important nerves and blood vessels. Radiotherapy often with chemotherapy is a well-established option in the treatment of head and neck cancers so it is normal for this to be a recommended treatment.

I expect your husband's case will be reviewed by the specialist team at the Christie Hospital and hopefully, he will find out more about what they plan soon.

It is difficult for us to say exactly what may happen at the appointment, but as it will be the first time the specialist team will be meeting you and your husband they may go through the diagnosis again and check you both understand it. They then may go through in more detail the treatments that are available to him.
