It's good that you have a GP appointment arranged for it to be checked out. Hopefully it will be due to a fungal infection or trauma but don't panic if you are referred to a dermatologist as they are the experts. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
I think it is hard not to worry while waiting for an appointment but, as Angie says, there are other things that can cause toenail discolouration such as fungal infections which are much more common, and therefore more likely.
There is no way around the waiting but try and keep and open mind. If you can, resist looking things up online as well - this takes most people around in circles without being much the wiser, generally; distraction is a better coping strategy.
