Bloated - 6 weeks post op mastectomy

Hi

I had a mastectomy 6 weeks ago and for the last 2 weeks I have been having an ever increasing bloating, sometimes to the point I feel my stomach will pop. I’ve asked my GP and she gave me omeprazole which I’ve been taking every day now for about 8 days - I have been advised I will need to take them for months. She says it’s just due to having major surgery and the chemicals etc your body has to deal with. But the bloating is feeling worse not better. I am eating healthily, trying to exercise, (although that’s difficult as I feel so heavy and in pain with my joints). I’m doing my arm exercises as advised by the breast team but in honesty I think I felt better 2 weeks post op!

Any advice?
Thank you

  • Hello Jacqui and thank you for contacting us.

It is difficult to say what might be the reason for you feeling this bloating but I am glad you have spoken to your doctor.

Everyone is different after surgery, with different side affects or different rates of healing. So it is all quite an individual thing.

Here is the UK breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now's, advice for after breast cancer surgery.

Take care Jacqui and if you remain concerned do with talk to your GP again or contact your hospital team. If you have been given a the number for a specialist nurse (CNS) maybe give them a call and leave them a message.

If you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.
