Heavy bleeding during smear test

Hi,

I had my smear test today. When the nurse put the speculum in my vagina (she was not gentle at all :( ) and she was about to insert the little brush, she noticed I was bleeding. She took the sample anyway and then she said that the bleeding was not normal unless I was expecting my period. (I am not) I was so nervous and she checked again, this time using a smaller speculum just to check everything was ok?. When I sat down I realized the white tissue placed under me was covered in blood. She gave me a pad and said if the bleeding continues or becomes worse and I don't feel well I should go to A&E... the bleeding stopped completely after a few minutes. I only have a light spotting that I only notice when I go to the toilet and I don't feel unwell. I am just very nervous as she said that was the first time she experienced something like that.

I am really worried,

Thanks in advance

  • Good evening Domelly30

Thank you for posting a question for the nurses. The nurses normal operating times are Monday – Friday between 9 am and 5 pm.

Ordinarily, you would receive a response from a nurse early next week. Unfortunately, we will be carrying out some essential maintenance on Cancer Chat throughout Monday and Tuesday so the forum will be unavailable until Wednesday.

Please rest assured a nurse will respond to your post as soon as they can but if you want to speak to a nurse in the meantime, they would be happy to take your call. They can be contacted on freephone 0800 800 4040 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday

    Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Domelly30 and thanks for posting,

Light bleeding or spotting after smear tests is not uncommon but usually short lived.  I am not sure if the amount of blood you lost falls within this category. But as the nurse didn't seem to think so which I think is why you are worried, it is probably best to go back to the surgery and either ask the practice nurse or GP to assess this for you.  Hopefully they can put your mind at rest,

    Best wishes,

    Julia
