abnormal bone marrow

hey ladies and gents! Hoping for a bit of reassurance before i end up sectioned! Little about me, I was diagnosed in 2020 with breast cancer (estrogen driven) had chemo radiation and am currently on tamoxifen and zoladex. I also had no node involvement and clear margins, plus a clear bone scan at the time. I have had 3 clear mammogramms since all of which have been clear. since diagnosis I have had lower back pain, I have mentioned this several times and been told it is likely an effect of the meds Im on. To be honest it is not so much painful just there, something i can live with. More recently when sitting for a period of time my left leg has gona slightly numb, this soon wears off when I am up and about. To air on the side of caution I went to the doctors who refered me to a physiotherapist. After a few tests he asid there was a weakenss in my leg and would refer me to his seniors. In the meantime I got in touch with my private health through work who sent me for a MRI- I honestly thought I would have a call saying it was a trapped nerve or something, but he called me and just said I have a  abnormal bone marrow signal and he needs it to be checked by a onocologist. Now let me tell you, I havent ate, slept functioned since this call. I am driving myself insane, good old google gives me lots of responses adn actually says it can be quite common but as you can imagine your mind wont accept this. I am now waiting on a call from a oncologist, just wondering if anyone has had anything similar which turned out to be nothing? Thanks

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern however please know that there can be many reasons why an MRI scan gives a result that there is an abnormal bone marrow signal, and they are not all related to cancer.

You may need to have more tests to find out what this means. Until then it is not possible for anyone here to tell what is the matter.  Also, please be aware that asking other people for their experience is not necessarily going to help you understand your situation any better but may give you more concern.

I hope you have some support at this time. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi Mary

Thanks but no not good, can't get my head around it. They said it's secondaries, my kidney and liver function fine and no rise in tumour markers, no sign of it in any organs. Because of where its located they not sure they can biopsy, still holding out they can and find out its not the dreaded C and that this is just 1 big nightmare! (PRAYING FOR A MIRICLE) X

  • Yes. I shall cross all fingers (and have a good pray too) for the best news for you.

cancer treatments are improving all the time and many people really are living longer with secondaries. And the longer we live, the more treatments become available.

It will be twelve years with secondaries for me this July. It's been a tough journey at times, but I'm still here, alive and kicking and being a complete pain in the backside as always!

Wishing you all the very best.

    Mary
