Breast and armpit lumps

Hello

I hope it's okay to post here and ask this.
My mum has recently found a lump on her breast and after going to the hospital they have found that her lymph nodes in her armpit on the same side as the breast lump are swollen.
Are these two things together always cancer?
Can it be anything else?
kind regards

  • Just like cancer can travel to those nodes, infection travels to those nodes too. So, it's not always cancer. Infection is more common in lymph enlargement.

  • Thank you I appreciate such a fast reply, I knew that infections can cause then to swell Iv had my own scares with them. Iv just been worried because if the big lump on her breast accompanied by swollen lymph nodes on the same side. I couldn't seem to find any other answer on the web

She gets her results at an appointment Wednesday and I wanted to be a bit more aware of things, in the hopes that I can help her in anyway as much as I can, if I even can.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear your mum is going for tests on her breasts.

In answer to your question a lump on your breast and under your arm does not always mean a cancer diagnosis. There are other non cancerous conditions that women can get. Lymph nodes act like a filter for the body and can come up when an infection is present.

When there is a lump in the breast it is important that it is investigated and cancer is ruled out. The doctors may want to take a biopsy of the breast so they can look at the cells under a microscope. This will tell the doctors more about the lump.

If you can try and discuss this with your mum.

I wish you and your mum all the best,

    Catherine
