Hyponatremia

At an appointment last week that I expected to be about the start on an Iobiotec trial (at Stage 4 melanoma), I was told of a need to rethink - I am now to start on Pembrolizumab shortly. The reason given was a blood test result showing hyponatremia.  This was completely unexpected and I failed to ask about this. Is this for the hospital or my GP? I found no results for this word when searching the site.  Thanks.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

Hyponatremia means that the sodium levels in the blood is low. It can be caused by many different health problems. So this might be why you can no longer take part in the trial as the entry criteria for all trials is usually very strict.

I would say that you should talk with your cancer team that referred you to join the trial about this and ask why you can no longer take part in the trial. It is really is only them that can tell you this.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Caroline
