Raised Ca125 and Hysteroscopy

Hello All,

I phoned my doctor pre Christmas as I was feeling a bit off and thought I may be peri menopausal.  I had some bloods done and came back with low iron and raised CA125 of 99.  I was referred for a pelvic ultrasound which resulted in a thickened endometrium, heterogeneous and atypical in appearance.
I've had another 2 blood tests since mid cycle (as it should be lowest at this stage). They second result lowered slightly to 96 and the third which I received last week had risen to 118.
Gp has just requested a bowel screening now also as I have other symptoms going on there and I've been waiting for a Gyne appointment to have a Hysteroscopy since early Jan.  My Gp said she'd contact them to get the appointment hurried along and encouraged me to phone and do the same.
After a couple of phone calls from me the next day they booked me in for end of March.  Meaning it's likely going to be April before I hear any results.
This seems an awful long time and the longer I'm waiting the more frightened I'm getting.

  • I do not know if it will help,. as I am post menopausal .  I know what is to wait for tests  and how or preys on one's mind.  In November aftersome episodes of acute pain I found I had  an large ovarian cyst, thickened endometrium and atypical lining of womb and a Ca 125 of 92.  While I was awaiting the hystoscopy,  a couple days before Xmas , the cyst  twisted and I had an emergency operation to remove it and the Fallopian tube. They did hysocopy at same time

I have just got my results some 8 weeks later and it is all clear. So CA125 does not always mean cancer , can be other things causing it.
hope it will all work out for you

  • Hello Mhainnin and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you need to have a hysteroscopy and can appreciate that waiting for tests can be unsettling.

CA125 levels can be elevated for a variety of reasons and are by no means always due to cancer and a thickened endometrium is often due to a condition called endometrial hyperplasia. So try not to think that cancer is the most likely explanation for whatever is going on - a lot of the time it isn't, but waiting to find out is inevitably unnerving and stressful.

I don't know if your GP can do anything to bring your appointment forward or if there is a possibility of getting a referral to another hospital nearby- but the waiting times may be the same.  I think it would be a good idea to let your GP know the date of the appointment you have been able to make.

I hope everything turns out ok.
