Fit test greater than 400

Hello I'm new to this forum but getting very worried as fit test in stool came back greater than 400. For the past 3 weeks been having blood in my stool. Just the last couple of days feel like I've been hit by a brick, having pain and cramps in abdomen, feeling freezing cold, extremely sick and no energy what so ever. The doctor has ordered me to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy just worried it's cancer. Has anyone got any experience of this?

  • Hi Jem4

Sorry to read you are going through this wait.

I am also waiting to get a colonoscopy after an abnormal fit test.

So anyone that has an abnormal fit test gets put on the 2 week pathway for a colonoscopy,  no matter thr number. Its procedure now.

The bleeding could be caused by any number of things,  mainly piles or fissures but they have to check as could also be bowel disease like crohns, colitis etc and sometimes yes it could be bowel cancer but most colonoscopies do not show this.

Your other symptoms could be down to the stress of this or could be a virus.ive been down with a bug since Friday..

As my husband says there is no point in worrying until you know you have something to worry about

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you are having and appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you.

Symptoms as I am sure you are aware have many different causes and most won't be the result of cancer but often tests are needed to find out more and rule out something more sinister as well.

You would expect for anyone who has visible blood in their stool to get a high FIT test result but there can be other reasons for blood that isn't cancer.

Try and not over think this but take things one step at a time until you have all the information about what is going on. Do let your doctors know if symptoms are worsening or changing and out of hours or in an emergency call NHS111 for advice.

I hope you have family and friends around you to look after and support you and really hope you have some more answers soon.

Get back in touch if you would like to or you are welcome to call the helpline on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5 if you prefer.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • To all who have had a >400 Fit result and subsequent worries of cancer, I had this result following only 2 minor incidents of blood on stool in December 23. 2 week referral with 'suspected cancer' is terrifying and the anxiety of the colonoscopy  outcome is awful. However, today i had the colonoscopy and have emerged with 'no evidence of cancer' only a single small polyp removed which surgeon described as benign pending biopsy result. Also a haemorroid and a bit of diverticulitis which is not threatening.

Like most on this forum, I was not reassured by anyone else's responses but now I urge folks to be positive and hope that the statistics are real - most positive tests are negative for cancer. Especially if you are chasing it up sooner rather than later following onset of any symptom.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is encouraging that you have had the colonoscopy and there is no evidence of any cancer.

Thank you for letting us know.

    All the best,

    Catherine
