Camera revealed need for scan and fine aspiration biopsy

I'm 25 years old and otherwise fit and healthy.

2 months ago I found a hard lump on my lymph node under my jaw. I monitored it and found no change so, 2 weeks ago, I went to my GP. He sent me for an urgent appointment at the ENT department & I was seen today. They put a camera down my throat and did a thorough investigation. They found a normal voice box but confirmed that there was a lump in the location I had indicated.

I know you shouldn't read into things too much but the doctor told me I needed to return for an ultrasound and quite possibly a fine aspiration biopsy. He stressed that it was probably nothing but was also debating with himself whether to send me for a CT scan too.

it's difficult to take comfort in what he said given the extent of the follow up examination in a couple of weeks. Im trying not to think about it, though I can't help but feel he must have seen something that indicated real concern.

Besides an occasional ringing in the ear on the side with the lump, I don't really have any other symptoms (notwithstanding the hard, painless lump).

im finding it increasingly difficult to eat, sleep & function in what is quite a stressful, client facing job. Im not sure what I'm looking for here; maybe some clarification about whether this is standard procedure/how to cope/whether I'm worrying unnecessarily.

Many thanks for your time.

  • Hello there

Waiting on tests and not knowing what is going on is bound to be an anxious time but try not to over think things until you have all the information.

Symptoms can be caused by many different things and likewise most lumps and bumps in the body will be harmless and the result of something far less serious than a cancer.

You have done the right thing getting this checked out by your GP who then sent you to ENT and now they are arranging an ultrasound, which is an appropriate and routine test when a lump is found. As they have also said if needed they can also take a biopsy of the lump but this won't always be necessary.

Do remember age is also on your side as all cancers are rare in someone so young. Try not to dwell on this and rather keep yourself busy and your mind on other things as this can help.

It is important to look after yourself by eating healthily, trying to go to sleep at a decent time and getting some exercise may also boost your mood.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi,

Thanks so much for getting back to me with such an elaborate reply. I had an ultrasound done today and they have put in an urgent request for a biopsy.

I recognise that it's not sensible to be thinking the worst, I just don't know what else to think now really. It's a tough time...

Thanks again for your reply and have a great day
