Cancer cells found in lymph nodes

I was diagnosed back in November with an extensive area of DCIS. I had a mastectomy and sentinel Lymph node biopsy in December. I went back for the results this week and have been told they have found cancer cells in the Lymph node but can't find any invasive cancer in the breast tissue has anyone else had this. Now waiting to find out what the next step is.

  • Hi Ajrugeley and thanks for posting.

It can be a worrying time when you are waiting to find out what the next step will be.

When cancer cells have been found in the lymph nodes you can be offered surgery called a lymph node clearance as Laraj said.

This is an operation that takes place under general anaesthetic.  You will have all the lymph nodes removed from your armpit.  You can find out more about it here.  Some people are offered radiotherapy instead, but this rarely happens.  Your surgeon or oncologist will be able to give more details about this when you speak to them.

I hope this is helpful and you find out what the next step is soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
