Brain tumour removal

My nephew, 23 years old, has a brain tumour growing from the brain itself so we are told that it cannot be completely removed. My question is this: if the section of brain where the tumour is 'rooted' isn't controlling a vital function, can it be removed anyway? Perhaps losing a sense or an ability is better than losing a life? My apologies if this is a stupid question or it has been posted before, but I'm really clutching at straws.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your nephew. I can image that this must be a difficult time for you all. It is never a stupid question and I am sure that you are trying to explore all of your nephews options.

I am sure that if the surgeon could remove the tumour then I am sure they would try and do so. As they are not able to remove all the tumour there is always the chance that it will continue to grow.  As I am not involved it is really only his surgeon who can really answer your questions.

If you would like to ring and chat to one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to give us a ring. we are here monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is 0808 800 4040.

    All the Very Best,

    Catherine
