Biopsies for Flexi Sig - normal?

I have had rectal bleeding, nausea and irregular stools for over a year now and have recently started to lose weight. My doctor suspects ulcerative colitis and sent me for a flexible sigmoidoscopy. They found 3 haemorrhoids and no polyps (thank God) and said the colon looks normal, but they still took 6 biopsies. Does this mean I'm in the clear for colorectal cancer or is it still possible to have this without polyps? Thank you for any replies :)

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have been having and appreciate you wanting to know what may be causing them.

It is reassuring to hear you had a sigmoidoscopy and other than some haemorrhoids nothing else unusual was seen. It is a standard procedure to take biopsy samples regardless of what is or isn't seen, so try not to over think this.

Unfortunately no one on here can ever say what the matter may be so whilst I think it sounds like everything is good news you need to wait and speak to your doctor once the biopsy results are in to confirm everything is okay.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • hey! i know it’s been a while since this post I found it through a lot of the same symptoms- did you figure out if everything was all good? :)

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I see that you posted trying to connect with another forum member who has not been active on here for quite some time, so they may not get back to you.

Bowel symptoms can often have a number of medical explanations. Constipation and straining to go to the toilet can cause bleeding, so can having an anal fissure (small tear), or haemorrhoids ( piles). But only a doctor can make a medical assessment, so we always encourage people to make an appointment see their GP if their symptoms are persisting.

Doctors are trained to assess symptoms and can arrange tests if they feel it’s necessary to try to find out what might be going on. If needed, they may consider referring you to the hospital for further tests.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
