Prostate cancer

My husband was diagnosed in mid July , told in was 3TA GLEASON 9 very aggressive prostate cancer. How soon should his treatment start? Oncologist app on 9 November , been taking hormone treatment since august though, no injections yet as he can't decide on treatment!!! How quickly should he be dealing with this? He's not keen on op as there's no gaurentee that this cancer won't change scoring as more can be found during operation? So confusing, doctors don't answer any question clearly. Does he need to get a move on , they word aggressive freaks me out.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and I can appreciate your concern. However, please remember that he has started treatment already- he is having hormonal treatment. This can shrink the cancer. So, I think that the specialist team he is under want to see what effect this treatment has on his cancer before deciding on the next treatment.

Your husband may have a prostate cancer nurse specialist you could both speak to and to ask about his treatment plan, leave a message on their phone and they will get back to you.

It might be helpful for you both to read the information about prostate cancer and how it is treated on our website, you can see it here

You would also be very welcome to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

I don't think you can insist on your husband having a CT scan, but you can certainly ask his doctors about this. There are a number of tests and investigations that are considered when someone has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. You can read more about this here.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
