Stomach cancer -FIT test - help, please

Hi,

I took a FIT test this week. There was blood in my stool (which I noticed anyway), and I will now be referred to the specialist doctor for further check-ups.

I took the FIT test because I had been having stomach pain/cramps and had been releasing really smelly wind for a number of days, possibly weeks.

I also lost about 4-5 kg in weight in around a month/six weeks (although I am not sure it is because I keep an eye on what I eat and walk or because of anything sinister in my body).

However, things have become better now after I changed my diet. I eat gluten-free and dairy-free food, as I initially thought that it was gluten that was causing all those issues.

Regarding blood in my stool… I noticed it ONLY once and it was the same sample that I used for the FIT test. I have been checking my stool regularly since then, and it seems that there is no blood (to the naked eye). There was no blood in my stool prior to the FIT test.

I am Indian and 35 (male).

Does anyone know if having blood ONCE in the stool is worrying?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate that it is worrying when test results aren't normal, but bleeding in the stools can occur for several reasons and often has nothing to do with cancer. In addition cancer in your age group is less common so another explanation for this bleeding is more likely, however it is sensible to have this looked into to be sure there is nothing serious going on.

Blood in the stools can be visible or hidden.  A FIT test is to look for hidden blood really, but it seems you had spotted some obvious bleeding anyway.  Obvious bleeding is usually coming from lower down the bowel rather than the stomach and a common cause can be haemorrhoids (also called piles).

Try not to worry for now and resist the urge to spend too much time online trying to look for answers, it seldom helps and can make people worry more.

Please give us a call if you want to talk anything over. We are around weekdays, 9-5 and the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Julia
