Biopsy results

Hi.

I had some biopsies taken about 5 weeks ago to test for skin cancer. I have now received a letter with an appointment to go discuss my results, the appointment is not for another 2.5 weeks.

I have rung up and they will not tell me anything over the phone other than they have my results and the appointment is to discuss these, now this is all I can think about and worrying. Has anyone else had this? I would have thought I would have been seen quicker if the result was positive but then argue with myself if it was negative would I not just have received the results in the post to say negative?

My head is spinning

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I don't think anyone can presume that because they have to wait 2.5 weeks for an appointment to get their biopsy results that they don’t have anything to worry about. This is a normal timeframe for people to wait. Everything will hopefully be fine but you need your hospital team to confirm this for you.

Hopefully, someone will come along and post. But do bear in mind that everyone's situation is different, so whatever happened with them might not shed any light on your situation.

Waiting when you are worried is stressful but hopefully you will find out more soon. I hope everything turns out to be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you very much for the reply, I will wait and see what they say at the appointment and try not to stress too much.

    Many thanks

  • So I have my results and it says nodular inflatrative bascal cell carcinoma, extending into the superficial subcutaneous fat and to the depth of 1.5mm.

This is on my forehead a bit confused as to what this means, does this mean it is deep or not as 1.5mm does not sound it? My appointment was the 19th to discuss the results but has since changed to the 2nd of November.

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us again,

there are several types of basal cell carcinoma's. Nodular basal carcinoma being the most common. Infiltrative nodular basal cell carcinoma is a subtype of nodular basal cell carcinoma. The pathologist has looked at the cells under the microscope to work out the depth of the cancer so the doctors can decide the most appropriate treatment. Basal cell carcinomas are usually very easily treated.

They tend to grow down rather then spread to other parts of the body. They are also fairly slow growing.

The British Association of Dermatology have produced some information on BCC which you can read here

We also have some information on how treatment decisions are reached here

I do hope that some of these links may be helpful. If you would like to ring and chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then do get back to us or give us a ring. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the very best,

    Catherine
