Thyroid removed little support

Hello,  I had my whole thyroid removed on Monday.  After 2 and half days in hospital,  I wasn't given much information other than here your medication and see you in 3 weeks.

My questions are:

Is it normal to have numb skin under chin to stitches?

Should I be doing neck exercises?

I have tape over disolverable stitches,  should I take them off?

Thank you for taking the time to support.  I appreciate any help.

  • They don't seem to give much information on discharge at the moment l had the some  vague instructions after gynaecology surgery recently. I had been on a general ward rather than gynaecology the nurse just said keep the wound clean don't drive for a couple weeks. I could hardly get in the car never mind driving.

I would either ring the ward and ask them to explain how to care for your wound, or contact your GP surgery ask to see or speak to the nurse. l have numbness under my abdominal wounds it seems to slowly recover as it heals.

l hope you are feeling well soon

  • I'm not a nurse and I had a larger operation as I also had lymph nodes removed, but yeah, I would say numb skin is normal. I still have a bit of numbness two and a half years later.

  • Hi ThyroidGoddess88 and thanks for posting.

We have some information here about how you might feel after thyroid surgery which you may find useful.

It is normal to have numbness in the area around your scar, the feeling in this area will hopefully return over time.

If there is tape in place over the stitches it will come off gradually.  If you are concerned about the healing or worried about anything else to do with the surgery you can phone the ward where you had your operation.  You can also speak to your GP.

There is an information leaflet here which has neck exercises and other information about thyroid surgery and your recovery which you may find useful.

You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Rachel

  • Thank you all so much,  I feel so much better today after reading your messages.
