ovarian cancer and antidepressants

Having been treated for ovarian cancer recently and suffering from depression, I have now been prescribed an SSRI antidepressant. However I was worried by reading reports regarding shorter remission time of ovarian cancer and this medication. I would be grateful if anyone has any knowledgre regarding the safety of this drug and if it is safe to continue using.

  • Hello Eilish and thanks for posting,

I am not sure what the reports you have read are based on, but if a medicine for one condition has been shown to have a harmful effect on another, there is usually a warning both to the doctors prescribing it and in the patient leaflet explaining all about it. Medicine regulations cover this sort of thing.

I think the best thing to do would be to talk this over with your cancer specialist team and get their take on it. They can look into it on your behalf so that hopefully you feel more comfortable. You could also ask your GP to do this.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays, from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
