Suspected Lymphoma

Hey guys,

I came across ths forum yesterday and I thought it might be a good place to vent!

So in June I noticed a lump in my left armpit, I phoned the GP after a couple of weeks when another one had appeared, and by the following week I had a few. The GP examined me and said I also have some in my neck. They did a FBC and advised me to wait and see if they disappeared in a couple more weeks, in case it was due to something viral.

On 28th July I saw her again as the lumps were still there, and she did a Fast Track referral to Haemotology, with a 2 week priority. However, I have only had one hospital letter with an appointment for the 31st August. When I questioned this last week, the hospital said in the meantime I would have an appointment for a scan, before seeing the Dr at the end of the month. I still haven't received any more appointments, and I guess I'm just wondering if this is normal, as I thought the 2 week rule meant I would have been seen by someone  by this Thursday?

I think being in limbo is the hardest part, trying to stay positive but also prepare myself, but the waiting is so stressful!

I was reading a BBC article today that said the wait for cancer testing and care is horrendous at the moment, so I'm just looking for any kind of reassurance!

Thank you for reading :)

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

This all sounds very normal and appropriate, so I hope that offers you some relief. The two week wait referral process is a guide for them to assess you and decide who needs to be seen when, and you have received a specialist appointment so that is reassuring.

It is important that you have a scan, and this is reported on, before you see this doctor. This will help to assess you and get better idea of whether there is anything the matter.

It might be an idea to ring the radiology department where you have been referred to see if there are any scans booked in for you but the letter has yet to go out. Sometimes they also call or text with appointments.

Lumps can occur for other reasons other than cancer, but it is always good to get them checked out.

Take care, and if you can do try and keep yourself busy so that your mind is distracted over the next few weeks. This may help time pass quicker to your appointment. If want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is 0808 800 4040, 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

  • Hi Sarah!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, your response was really helpful!

Luckily I received a call this morning with an appointment next Thursday for a scan and a biopsy, so I feel much more relieved now! It's just the waiting for things to happen that I find stressful, but a week is no time at all, and I have plenty of jobs to occupy me!

Thank you again for being so kind and reassuring!
