Advice regarding urgent referral/waiting for appointment

I posted this in the pre-diagnosis forum also, but wondered if  this may be a better place to ask. I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago as I saw blood in my stools - bright red streaks sometimes on the paper and sometimes in the stools like a ripple. The faecal test showed it was blood so my GP referred me fast track for suspected bowel cancer. I still have not got an appointment through in the post (so they are going beyond the two week window). I called the colorectal secretary at my local hospital and she said there is a backlog, but the usual route would be that I would have an appointment with a colorectal nurse (once I get the appointment!) and they would then decide whether I should have a colonoscopy or something else. Given that I haven't got an appointment yet and given the NHS backlog, I am really worried that I will have to wait a long time before even getting a diagnosis or understanding what is causing the bleeding. This is such a worrying time as we are constantly told with cancer time is of the essence.

However, my mother-in-law has offered to pay to go private, but I have seen how expensive that is. If I had a consultation and, say a colonsocopy and 'if' the suggestion was that it was probably a tumour/cancer - I don't think my mother in law could stretch to anything further on private. In that case, does anyone know: could I then have treatment on the NHS and would it make a difference timewise (would there be a delay getting back into the NHS). I just don't know what to do - whether to wait for my NHS appointment or gt a consultation privately. Any advice would be most welcome!!

  • Hello sorry to hear about your symptoms. I went through something similar in March. I had blood in stools and the faecal test showed blood so my GP referred me for an urgent referral. Still get occasional blood but not as bad as March.

Unfortunately I still haven't been contacted by them. I called them in April and they said the urgent waiting list could take until October. I requested my GP medical notes and saw that my doctor had stated that the 2ww isn't necessary due to my age but she would still appreciate an urgent appointment due to my symptoms. You might be able to request your notes to see what have been said about your referral that you're not aware of.

What I do and what I would suggest you do is to keep a diary of your symptoms (there is one on the bowel cancer uk) page. Call your GP whenever you have new symptoms or if they persist. If you're not sure what to do about your symptoms, use the NHS 111 online to see if you need to go to A&E and they might try to fast track it.

I don't know much about private hospitals so can't help you there. Hopefully someone else on here can help you with that.

Hope things turn out okay for us x

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your long wait for treatment. I can only imagine how frustrating this must be for you.

It may help to speed the process up to see a private colorectal surgeon and then possibly  have a colonoscopy if that is what they advise so you can hopefully you can find out the cause of your symptoms.

A lot of colorectal surgeons practice in the NHS and the private sector and the best thing would be to switch from private to the NHS with the same person. This doesn't always work but you could try.

To find out how much it would all cost have a look at Private Health Care here

You could have a look at colorectal surgeons in your area and where they practice in the NHS.

The NHS are duty bound to treat you regardless of the referral route that you take. Your private consultant will write a letter to your GP telling them the situation and they'll probably copy in the NHS specialist team at the hospital too if this is necessary.

There is more information on the NHS website about how your care will be affected if you have some treatments done privately. Have a look here

I do hope some of these links may help and that you know more about your situation soon.

If you want to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thanks Amelia

So sorry to hear about your experience also. I didn't realise that about the notes. It is very worrying - October seems a long way away. I guess I am wondering what to do while I wait, but thank you very much for your advice - I will check out the pages and keep an eye on the symptoms too.

  • Thank you Catherine, that's very helpful!

  • Thank you. I called my GP on Wednesday about new symptoms and she thinks it's necessary for me to be on the 2ww pathway now. It feels like such a weight lifted off my shoulders that I don't need to wait until October now thank goodness.

It's so important to keep track of symptoms and keep GP updated.
