Fasting and cancer

Has any research been done regarding the impact of fasting and ketogenic diets specifically by CRUK?

There are numerous papers, studies, Ted talks and publications in research journals that indicate fasting has positive affects on cancer patients with varied extremities but I cant seem to find an official post that clarifies this by CRUK.

Grateful for any links or information.

  • Hello Lovemywife and thanks for posting,

In general, there hasn't been very much in the way of clinical research,  that is research in people taking part in trials, into fasting or ketogenic diets and cancer.  What has been done so far isn't enough to draw any firm conclusions from or make specific recommendations. This could change in the future, but for now the general advice to people undergoing treatment or getting on with life afterwards is usually to try and eat a healthy, varied and balanced diet and talk things over with their specialist doctor if they are thinking about making any dietary changes.

To answer your question, I have looked at several reviews which summarise the research studies so far and provide a commentary.  If you would like to have a look at a couple of these yourself (they are open access), follow the links below,

I am not sure how much research CRUK has directly funded in this area, if this is something you want to find out I would need to direct you to our Supporter Services to look into it for you. Get back to me if you want their contact details.

    All the best,

  • Hey Julia

Thanks so much for your reply reply and for sharing the links - They were helpful but didn't draw on any clear conclusions. I hope CRUK will do something here to guide patients on optimizing diets and lifestyles for the best possible outcome -I feel patients need less of a blanket approach answer.

  • I myself would eat things that keep me strong enough to handle all the treatment i have to go through nomater what food it was. Remember treatment for cancer can really knock people down and make them struggle to keep going with treatment.

Hope you get information you want.

  • Hi Billy - thank you.
I certainly haven't forgotten what treatment looks like for cancer patients, that's not where I'm going with this. I'm trying to findout what foods and eating patterns are biologically proven to improve the prognosis or well-being of cancer patients (taking how food might make me feel out of the equation).

It's strongly researched even in some cases by credible sources but there are of course variables in this such as type/stage of cancer, age, state of mind etc that play a role on how research can be delivered.

I think above all it surprises me that we don't have this basic fundemental information as a certainty after decades and decades of research.

  • I can see where your coming from with trials to help but doubt it will be very useful as people's bodies can vary taking same foods same as some people cannot tolerate certain foods there's alot of variables to take into account. It would be very useful if someone could get a trial which will took everything into account and worked we will have to see what can be done hopefully in the near future. As you say type of cancer and the rest can make a difference.
