Clarification on Diagnosis

Hi.  My close friend's husband, who is also a very dear friend, has been diagnosed with a 6cm tumour in his bowel. Surgery is scheduled in a week to remove the tumour and I want to be able to support them both.   They are still processing the news as it is such a shock and I want to be able to support them correctly, without bombarding them with questions of my own so I haven't asked what stage the cancer is at, nor the long term prognosis.  Would someone be able to give me some idea of what to expect?  The information I have is that the tumour is 6cm, it hasn't spread outside the bowel and the surgery will hopefully be keyhold surgery.   What stage would this cancer be and will the surgery get rid of it, or will he still need ongoing treatment?  Thank you.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your friends situation and appreciate you wanting to be there for them.

Without being involved in your friends care it is difficult to be able to say for definite what stage the cancer may be, but do have a look at the information about bowel cancer here on our website that explains the different ways bowel cancer is staged.

Generally speaking the earlier the stage a cancer is diagnosed  the higher chance that treatment will be successful. Sometimes surgery alone is enough to remove a small stage cancer, sometimes more treatment such as chemotherapy after the operation is needed if the cancer and is assessed as high risk that the cancer could come back.

We have more information about treatments here and how to support someone going through cancer here.

I hope this is of some help to you but as I say the best people to talk about the stage and what the treatment will achieve is your friends who will have the answers first hand from the doctors.

Wishing you and your friends all the best

    Naomi
