Breast cancer diagnosis

Hi

i've just been diagnosed with I think IDC but not 100% as the whole appointment was a complete blur. The Consultant said it was the most common, very treatable and I would go on to live a normal life but I'm absolutely terrified and have done nothing but cry since I was told.

He said the tumour was 2-3 cm (don't know if that's big or small) and there were cancer cells present under my arm.  I have a CT scan booked for tomorrow morning and I'm scared that the diagnosis could be worse. Is that possible? Would they tell me it treatable if that wasn't the case? I then have to have chemo and then surgery. Why have they suggested I have chemo first? I'm all over the place at the moment, don't know what to think.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to learn of your situation and appreciate this must be a worrying and upsetting time for you.

News of cancer is never easy to take in but I think the more you understand about your situation the easier it will be to handle.

Invasive breast cancer here is the most common type of breast cancer as you say.  Chemotherapy is often given prior to surgery to shrink down the tumour and make breast conserving surgery possible.

Doctors don't usually say something is treatable unless they are confident this is to be the case. Some people have a CT scan to help the doctors stage (find out how big the cancer is and if it has spread anywhere else) the cancer that helps decide the best treatment.

Try and take things day by day for now until you know the bigger picture. Do talk through any questions or concerns you have with your team as they are in the best place to answer them.

Please get back if we can be of any more help to you. You can if you prefer give us a call on the helpline on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
