Breast Pain panic!

I've been suffering with a dull pulling pain behind my left breast for about 5 months and following a GP visit and a check of my breast we agreed it was likely to be hormonal related. I've just turned 48 and possibly perimenopausal. The pain is relentless and makes me feel sick and now and wakes me at night. Today my left shoulder and shoulder blade is painful and I don't know where this has come from. I've not injured myself yet it feels like I have. Then I realise the pain must be linked to the breast pain. And I'm panicking. Any advice would be so welcome right now.

  • Good afternoon LuLar

Thank you for posting in our Ask the Nurses topic area.

I just wanted to let you know that the nurses are out of the office for the East bank holiday weekend and won’t return until Tuesday 19th April when they will reply to your post as soon as they’re able.

In the meantime, if you're concerned about your symptoms over the next few days please do get into such with NHS 111 for advice.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi LuLar,

I'm sorry to hear your pain is getting worse.

Sometimes you can get referred pain in this area from other conditions. It might be related to a muscle or tendon injury but whatever it is it might be best for you to ring the NHS number for advice and they should be able to help you.

If you feel panicky then stop your current thoughts for a moment, sit down and breathe in and out deeply 5 times.

Anxiety and panic can make symptoms feel even worse.

Chronic pain is horrible, I have Fibromyalgia so I know only too well.

    Take care

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Breast pain is not a common sign of breast cancer, and as your GP said last time, is likely to be hormone related.

Do speak with them again, and see what they can suggest to help. Sometimes it can also be due to an infection in breast tissue, that is treated with antibiotics.

In the meantime, try to reduce caffeine and alcohol, as this may help with breast pain.

  • Thank you all so much for your kind replies. I was most definitely in panic mode posting this ‍♀️ & now in a much calmer place mentally.
I've had some bloods taken today and seeing GP on Friday.
    Thanks again.

  • Hi [@LuLar]‍

    Glad you're feeling calmer now.

I hope your GP can do something to help with the pain.

Do not be alarmed if you are given a referral to The Breast Clinic, they deal with all kinds of breast issues, and as Nurse Vanda said the pain can be due to an infection or quite commonly harmless cysts.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you and yes I've been fast tracked to the breast clinic today as the GP discovered a lump in my breast. I'm really trying not to over think it which is tricky as the examination has caused a pulling burning pain in my boob which is now making me feel sick. My bloods were clear so that's a positive :-)

  • Hi [@LuLar]‍

That's good as it's usually a one-stop experience and you'll get a really thorough examination and whatever tests they feel necessary all on the same day. Also good to hear your bloods were clear.

Lot's of women say that they have pain after examinations so it's not uncommon , do you have any cool packs or a wet cloth put in the freezer for a bit as this can be soothing but other than that try not to poke around the area, just leave it be.

Guidance is to be seen within 2 weeks but some areas of the country are unable to work to this due to backlogs and covid etc but if you haven't heard anything 1 week after your GP sent the referral then do ring them up to chase your appointment.

Not overthinking will help immnesely , do whatever you can to keep busy , that helps a lot!
