Trachelectomy in Scotland

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with stage 1b1, had mri last week to confirm, still awaiting results and haven't been assigned a gynaecologist/oncologist yet. My doctor told me to research my options for stage 1b as I won't get alot of time to decide after the mdt meeting.

I have been reading about trachelectomy and have been considering going that route if its still an option. However I have been reading on a lot of forums that they are not offered in Scotland, only in London. The posts are all from 5+ years ago though. So I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is still the case or if they're are other health boards offering them now? I'm in the north of Scotland so traveling to London for treatment/check ups just isn't an option for me. I don't want to get my hopes for something if it isn't even offered in my country. I asked my doctor about it but hes new to the country so isn't up to date with what is offered here.

Hoping someone here might know more as there's very little info online. TIA. X

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is true that trachelectomy is not available in all hospitals but there would be a hospital nearer then London that your doctor would be able to refer you to if they decided that this was the best treatment.

There is some information on having a trachelectomy on Jo's Trust's website here

It is important that the doctors get as much information from the MRI in deciding what your treatment options are. We have some information about stage 1 cancer and the different decisions about treatment that you can see here

    and here

I do hope that you know more about your situation soon. If you would like to chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then do give us a ring. Our number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine, thanks for your reply. That's reassuring to hear that it is offered in other areas. London would be a 15 hour journey, which after surgery I just don't think I can do. I got a call today asking I go in tomorrow for a meeting though so will hopefully get some more information then.

    Thanks again
