Calcifications are calcium deposits in the breast and although are not cancerous, they can sometimes hide some cancer cells. So it's not uncommon to have a biopsy of the deposits to make sure. There is more information about this here  

As you have a lump though, it may be helpful to have a discussion with the breast care nurse or consultant again as to what the next step may be now and whether a biopsy is going to be taken. The mammogram and ultrasound though, would perhaps have shown if there was anything of concern and needed further investigation.

People will have different experiences so although of interest, it may be best not to compare your situation with someone else.
