Raised CA125 level and HRT

I have been monitored by my GP at 6 monthly intervals due to a slightly raised (but stable) CA125 level - this has been going on for about 18 months now.

It has recently come to light that I am more than likely going through menopause - I am turning 52 shortly.

I thought it would be as simple as getting a script for HRT from my GP but it seems that due to my raised (but stable) CA125 level, it is more complicated and that by taking HRT it could be a risk.

I am not sure what to do? Are there any alternatives? Any advice? I don't want to take anything that would risk me getting ovarian or any form of cancer.

  • Hello Mavis2227 and thanks for posting,

I am not sure what led to you having CA125 monitoring, but assume at some point you have had an ultrasound scan that looked ok, and that this is a precaution.

HRT can increase the risk of both breast and ovarian cancer but not by all that much. You can read more about this on our website at this link .

The NHS has some information about the menopause on their website that might be worth looking at. And NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have guidelines for doctors which have a public version that you can also view.

The Women's Health Concern charity have a menopause leaflet that you can download as well.

I am not sure what sort of menopausal symptoms you are experiencing, but first off, the usual advise is often to think about your lifestyle and pay attention to diet and exercise as well as cutting down on alcohol and caffeine.

Alternative menopausal remedies, by which I mean those that aren't used in conventional medicine, tend not to have been well studied so can be lacking in evidence about how safe or effective they are. But things like cognitive behavioural therapy can help with mood changes and anxiety and there are some prescription only medicines that might help with flushes.

Have a bit of a read and do talk to your GP again .

    Best wishes,

    Julia
