Throat cancer scare

Hi, After having a sore throat for around 6 weeks or so, I have been put on the Cancer Fast Track and have now seen a throat doctor and also had an MRI scan done. I have a follow up appointment booked in for Thursday of next week, 8 days away. My question is - Can cancer of the throat potentially spread much in a week? The reason I ask is because if the answer is yes, I will happily pay to see the doctor privately as he has a private clinic this Friday, rather than wait 6 more days. Thank you for reading.

  • Hi in  a word no it won't spread in that shirt a time. I am 3.5 years post treatment for tonsils cancer and I wentb62 days from being put oncancer pathway to treatment starting . My blog May help you www.RadioactiveRaz.wordpress.com details my experience.
Good luck remember 90% of urgent referrals turn  out not to be cancer. Being put on pathway  quickest way to be seen.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you have cancer investigations, this must be a worrying time for you.

Cancer is unlikely to spread within a week. Remember that nearly everyone has to wait to be seen with a suspected cancer, and most people will not come to any harm waiting a few days or even a few weeks.

I hope you will be okay.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
