Mirena

I'm really worried about the effect of mirena coil on my breast cancer. It is hormone receptive so should I get the coil out. I'm getting mixed advice so far.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate you have some questions about your mirena coil.

Without being involved in your care we are unable to tell people what people should do and if you are still unsure after my reply do talk it through with your GP, specialist doctor or nurse.

We have information on the mirena coil and cancers here on our website. As you can see it clearly says that the manufacturers of these devices advise against women with hormone sensitive (estrogen positive) breast cancers, as well as some other cancer types.

There has been some research in this area looking at the link between the mirena coil and breast cancer and so far the picture is rather mixed. Many studies conclude there seems to be an an increased risk of breast cancer using these devices but they also highlight the need for more research.

At the end of the day there will always be a risk versus benefits of any treatment and it is very much about both the patient and the doctor finding the happy medium of what is best for them in their individual circumstance.

I hope this helps a little and you are able to decide what the right thing is for you to do.

Do get back if needed or call us on 0808 800 4040 to talk things through. we're here Mon-Fri 9-5.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Hi,

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last November and after a mastectomy in December I am currently having chemotherapy.  I had the Mirena coil fitted and because of all the conflicting information regarding the coil I decided to have it removed.  Everyone is different but for me I felt that I didn't want something in my body that could conflict with treatment.  There are other methods of birth control  one being 'not tonight I've got a headache ' but seriously it is down to the individual.  I also was advised that my treatment could also bring on the menopause so I opted for the removal.  Good luck and gentle hugs and love xx

  • Hi

    thanks for your reply.

I hope you have ways of getting through this.

I am thinking of the Mirena as the enemy so will probably get it removed.

I like the gentle hug , sending them back .
