Bowel cancer - chemo not poosible due to heart

Hi,

My husband has bowel cancer, he started first round of chemo, he was due chemo then surgery, but very quickly, chemo didnt go to plan, the chemo effected his heart which had been otherwise well. No blood clots, no furred up arteries. The upshot is chemo is not an option certainly for now, his heart needs to recover and subject to a heart scan he's now looking at going straight to surgery.. We have to wait 3 weeks for the scan. Now we have complications I just can't stop thinking about the worse, worried for his heart, more worried about cancer if chemo is not an option for after. We have not really had the chance to understand the full picture becauae everything will depend on his heart scan. How can I stop worrying about him dying. I'm worried sick. Chemo is always the treatment I associate with successful recovery, but without that, now I just feel so negative we have a young son. Has this happened to anyone else?  Im looking for some reassurance

  • Hi there and thanks for getting in touch

I'm so sorry to hear about your husbands situation and how his heart has been affected by the chemotherapy. This unfortunately can occasionally happen but I appreciate how this must be impacting you right now and what an anxious time it must be for you both.

I understand you wanting to reach out to others who may be in or have previously been in something similar to you but i'm afraid this may not be possible. Everyone's story is different and it is often impossible to compare.

It is a natural emotion to be worried even if treatment was going to plan, which sadly it isn't which must be making things feel far worse. The road called cancer can be gruelling and unpredictable for both patients and their loved ones and it is scary not knowing quite what might be around the corner.

At times like this people often find it best to try and take each day as it comes rather that look too far ahead in the future. At this present time there is no more information anyone can give you until the heart scan has been done, then the doctors can review this before deciding the next steps regarding treatment options. So i'm afraid as worrying as it must be try and sit tight for now.

I hope you have some good support around you during this time to share this with and help you out.

Do get back if we can be of any more help to you. You are also welcome to call the nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040, Monday-Friday 9-5 if you prefer to talk over the phone.

    All the best

    Naomi
