Terrified

Hi all,

I had an extremely painful lump in my right breast on the 17th December, had an emergency out of hours appointment the following day and was given anti biotics. A week later the pain has gone but lump is still there so managed a gp appointment this evening... I've now got an 'emergency suspected cancer referral' in the next 2 weeks and absolutely terrified. I'm 35 and have a 9 year old son amd have cried on and off all evening thinking the worst. Got an amazing husband but so scared of the outcome.

  • i and thanks for posting

It can be worrying having a breast lump , but the majority of people with breast lumps attending a breast clinic do not have cancer. Most breast lumps though in England will be referred under the 2 week rule, and not surprisingly, this can cause so much worry.

Take a step at a time - the waiting is horrid so try if you can to keep busy and take each day without looking ahead at the moment. You will be examined, have an ultrasound and sometimes a biopsy is also carried out. So there may well be more waiting for results. You can read more here about what to expect at a breast clinic appointment

Do give us a ring on Freephone 0808 800 4040, lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday, if you would like to have a chat, bearing in mind that at the moment no one will be able to tell you what this lump may be without having the tests first.

Hold your nerve and good luck for the appointment

    Wanda

  • Thanks so much for that reassurance. I think the leaflet that's headed 'emergency suspected cancer referral' I was given really knocked me for six yesterday! I feel more optimistic today as so many people have said the pain I had could have been an infection which has cleared up thanks to the anti biotics but left a bit of a lump, doesn't stop the anxiety though.
