Chemo and chicken pox ?

My partner is undergoing chemo at present and is supposed to see her friend on weds, her friend has just messaged saying a child she was with yesterday has chicken pox , is it safe for her to meet her friend ?

  • No. Steer clear. Ditto for folk with shingles. As the friend could still be carrying the virus to some extent.

    Edit: From this very site.

    "Infections and vaccines

Avoid family or friends who might have infections such as chicken pox. Let your doctor know if you think you’ve been in contact with someone who could have chicken pox."

48 hours after the kids spots have crusted over, it tends to be non-contagious.

  • Hi Phil13927,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can see you've received some useful advice from ProfBaw - I just wanted to add a quick reply to say that our nurses are back in on Wednesday 29th, after the bank holidays. So you'll receive a reply from them then - I appreciate it may not reach you in time to help with your decision, but hopefully you'll get this reply as soon as possible on the 29th.

    All the best,

  • Your partner has to be extra careful,as chemotherapy reduces the immune system,(white blood cells )so any virus or bug could have a very bad effect . good luck with your partner's treatment.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry that we have not got back to you sooner as I see that your partner  was meant to be seeing your friend today. It is probably a good idea for your partner to avoid seeing her friend until their daughter has recovered from chicken pox just to be on the safe side.

Chicken pox can be infectious for one to two days before the rash develops so if her friend has not had chicken pox as a child then she may be at risk of catching it and passing it on.

    I hope this helps.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
