Urgent referral for breast lump

Evening all,

Last week I had a dream that I had a breast lump, when I woke, I checked the area of my breast indicated in my dream and sure enough I found a lump.

I had my GP apt today and the doctor says I have a 2cm lump in my right breast, upper outer quadrant quite deep, it's reasonably hard and is completely pain free. I'm 37 with no history and no other symptoms (other than being exhausted for the past few months but I put this down to long Covid)

I'm feeling OK about the whole thing atm, almost numb to it.

I'm just wondering about the fact it's pain free, from what I have read, it seems that pain free lumps are more likely to be cancerous than painful lumps. Does anyone have any experience of a pain free lump that wasn't Cancer ? And what was your lump put down to on further examination ?

I've been referred on a Cancer pathway for an urgent referral so have a bit of time yet before I will know more.

Also wondering if anyone else had a premonition or dream which led to finding a lump or discovering Cancer....I'm quite spooked out about that part !

Thanks for reading, Much appreciated xx

  • Hi DooLallyLucy,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sure this must feel unsettling, but it's good to hear you have the referral as this should mean you get the answers you need before too long. If you'd like some information about what to expect at the appointment, please take a look at this page from Breast Cancer Now.

There could be benign reasons for the lump and this is the case for many people who get referrals. However in general it's best not to assume anything one way or the other, and instead to try to take things one day at a time and keep yourself busy while you wait. I hope that the appointment comes around soon.

There will be many others on the forum who have been through something similar, so if you don't receive further replies here then feel free to have a browse or a search of the forum for other relevant discussions.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Evening,

My lump was found by my husband but for weeks now the sticker in the ladies toilets at work for checking your boobs has stood out to me more prominently!

The nurse at the surgery thought it was fibrous and the nurse in the clinic said she'd be writing to me with the results and only spotted the one. I'm 44 with no previous history

I had my mammogram, ultrasound and core needle biopsy 4 weeks after first discovering the lump. Turns out there were 4 lumps in total (totally painless and not visible). 3 in my left breast and 1 under my arm . However I wasn't given any indication at the time as to whether they were suspicious or not.

A week after the needle biopsy the results came back and i got a phone call to book my appt to meet with my consultant for the following week. That appt was yesterday.

Turns out 2 of the breast lumps and the 1 under my arm are cancerous. So next on my list is a MRI and surgery.

For me the not knowing for sure was worse.

    Fingers crossed for you xx
