Lump on cervix/bleeding - referral

Hi all!

Hope you are all well. I am taking to writing on here as I'm extremely scared/worried but I don't want to worry the people in my life anymore than they are!

Several months ago I found a lump on my cervix when checking my coil strings and had had slight unusual bleeding after intercourse. I went to the sexual health clinic and the nurse was very unreasurring for what it could be and sent me away saying it "must be a polyp". As I was worried from her response I got my GP to look at it who also said don't worry it looks like a polyp so I left it.

fast forward to now- having intercourse last week I went to the toilet and was pouring heavily with blood. Visited doctor the next day who said the lump didn't appear like a polyp and was white looking and with the blood as well has referred me to be seen urgently within two weeks as she can't be sure what the lump is and is concerned about cervical cancer

i asked for a smear on several occasions and was always denied as I am only 22- now I am petrified and angry that if it is anything it could have been caught sooner. I'm still waiting for a letter for the referral and so scared everyday.

any reassurance or anything would be appreciated

Thank u xxx

  • Hi Iwarn99

It’s a common misconception that a smear test is a test for cervical cancer, but it isn’t. It’s a test for abnormal cells caused by the HPV virus which can, if left untreated turn cancerous. The best thing in your situation is to have symptoms investigated which is what will happen now. You will be seen quickly and examined by a gynaecologist who is the expert, not the gp

I absolutely understand your worry and how scared you will be, but hopefully you won’t have to wait long to get your referral and some answers. Try not to assume the worst at this point, although I know that can be difficult. You need to have the referral and a proper examination to get the answers you need. xx
