Sublingual melanoma

Hi, so about four years ago I noticed this light brown mark on my right hand index fingernaiI shrugged it off as an old nicotine stain because back then I smoked and just forgot about it.

Anyway long story short I finally took myself to a gp because one line turned into many and on Friday 3rd Dec I had my nail plate and nail bed biopsy and I'm not going to lie it is absolute agony!

I also have a painless lump on my neck (leftside by collarbone)

It has taken a total of 5 weeks from gp appointment to plastics to biopsy and I've been told could take 6 to 8 weeks for results, why does it take so long if sublingual melanoma is a rare cancer surely timing is key the sooner its spotted the easier it is to treat?!

I have been told there is no sign of Infection or trauma.

I'm not going to lie, I am scared but right now I am in pain they said take paracetamol but they doesn't do anything for the pain. I can't have ibuprofen because I'm allergic so what else can I take I've not slept properly in days

So tired, in pain and emotional any advice would be greatfully appreciated.

  • Hi Vix and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear you're still in a lot of pain since you had your biopsy. I really do hope this has improved since you made this post but if it hasn't and the paracetamol isn't working for you do be sure to get in touch with your GP as they may be able to provide you with a more suitable and effective pain relief. Your local pharmacist may be able to help as well.

Unfortunately I can't answer your questions about the results process but if you'd like to discuss this with one our cancer nurses then do give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope your results bring good news when they come through Vix.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
