Please offer advice how I can help my father

Hi

Simply after advice. I have become increasingly concerned about my father he is 67. So about 6 year ago he had test on his throat and he said everything was fine. However since he has had no voice box.... tecently he has lost about 4 stone in weeks. I visited him and he was struggled to breathe and his chest was rattling there was mucus and blood on his bedroom floor. Obviously I took him to hospital and they would not let me in with him because of covid. They discharged him hours later with no phone money or coat with antibiotics and steroids.

I finally found my father and he did not recall what the doctor said. Either that or he doesn't want me to worry.

I made a doctors appointment and yes blood test schedule and urine sample given in. The doctor said he would contact the hospital and chase the xray results etc.

My father is deteriorating like he has given up I feel like he knows something. How can I speed things along I don't want him to suffer like he is.

Because of covid I feel frustrated because they are not listening to me and he won't ask for help. He won't say he is in pain when he is.

They are not rushing test because they don't want to put on nhs.

Deep down I know what is wrong with my father but I'm lost because no one is listening to me. He's my dad and I just want answers.

  • Hi Josie22,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. This sounds like a really difficult situation and I can imagine this must be frustrating and upsetting. Firstly it's good to hear that he has seen the doctor and that some further tests have been done. I hope it's not too long to wait for the results and next steps, but keep chasing where you can and where the waiting time has gone beyond the initial timescales you were given.

I'm sure your dad knows how much you care and that you're there to support him, but keep speaking to him and supporting him to keep spirits up as much as possible. Keep looking after yourself too, as it's a lot of worry to take on, so take things slowly and one step at a time and get the support you need too. It may be helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses, both for general support but also to get any further advice on your situation. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

Take care and wishing you all the best,

    Ben
