Colon issues, FIT and calprotecin results

Hi everyone,

I am a 22 year old male turning 23 in March, I am 6ft3 and weigh about 85kg. Over the last few month I have been sometimes having flat sided stools, although most seem normal. Over the past 3-4 weeks I have been having very dull pains around my tummy which last for short periods and happen rarely, I also sometimes get a sharp pain that lasts for a second before it goes, this can happen anywhere around my tummy. Sometimes I get an itchy anus which can bleed easy when wiping. I also have Beaus lines on both of my big toes. This led me to go to the doctors last week, he got me to take a FIT test which came back positive with a reading of 40ug/g. He also got me to take a calprotecin test which came back positive with a reading of 160mg/kg. This has led to me having a 2 week referral. I also have a blood test on the 10th of December.

I know I can’t be diagnosed online but I am just looking for reassurance that it may not be the ‘worse’. Is there any chance this could be an IBD or a polyp? I don’t really get constipation or diarrhoea.

Thank you!

  • I am not any kind of expert, but I would say it is FAR more likely to be something like IBD or a polyp or hemorrhoids and IBS or any one of a number of things than it is to be cancer.

I am nearly twice your age and a couple of month ago, had a colonoscopy for rectal bleeding, some weight loss, occasional loose stools (maybe once a week) and trapped wind. The doctor said that at my age, the odds of cancer were very low, that it was most likely hemorrhoids with a chance of IBD and that while cancer always had to be considered, it would be the least likely of all the options and I would be "the most unlucky person in the world" if it turned out to be that. And that if I were in my 60s or 70s, cancer would be a much more likely possibility.

I know our symptoms are not the same, but you are even younger than me, so cancer is even less likely for you and given that you have an itch anus that bleeds easily, it is likely you have hemorrhoids or maybe a fissure and that is quite likely to be the cause of the high FIT test.

A 2 week referral doesn't mean they think cancer is likely. It just means it's a possibility. I think more than 90% of people referred in this way do not have cancer and given your age and the itchiness that accompanies the bleeding, the odds against cancer in your case are even higher.

  • Thank you for replying it really is appreciated. Like you said it probably is something a lot less serious, it's just so easy to go into panic mode. Your response has helped ease my mind a bit and I thank you for that:).

I hope your results did come back okay, keep well and stay safe!

  • Thank you. Yup, the results confirmed what we all thought most likely - hemorrhoids. The other symptoms were most likely a combination of the stress of waiting and just normal bodily changes that happen occasionally but that are more noticeable when you are watching things.
