High Risk HPV and low grade borderline changes

Hi so I've had HPV for two years and my latest smear shows I have high risk type HPV and low grade abnormalities known as borderline changes in squamous cells.  I'm freaking out. I've been bloating a lot recently too so I've had an extra panic.  I'm having a colposcopy on the 23rd of December.  I'm SO so scared. I know they all say its rarely cancer but that's not very comforting still. Also these kind of procedures give me so much upset because of trauma..  also, waiting for the results is so anxiety inducing.

  • Hello Hanzt11,

It's normal to be anxious especially if trauma you have suffered in the past means you are finding these procedures difficult to bear. However, try not to worry too much as low grade cervical changes are easily treatable but it's really important that you have your colposcopy treatment. You can read more about abnormal cervical cells on this page. Many of our members have been through this before and I hope they will be along shortly to share their colposcopy experiences with you. I am sure it will all go well for you and that you will get this dealt with quickly and efficiently.

You are right that waiting for results is, as many members will know only too well, anxiety inducing. The best thing to do really as you are waiting for your results is to take one day at a time if you can and keep busy and distracted, staying well away from Google as looking anything up online will only make you feel worse.

Sending you lots of positive vibes ahead of your appointment. It will all be done and dusted before you know, I promise!

    Best wishes,

    Hi!

Reading your smear results they look exactly the same as mine did on my most recent smear. I'd had hpv 2 years prior and this year it was still there with borderline changes.

I was terrified initially about the colposcopy, also due to past trauma. But I told the gynaecologist that I was really anxious and she made me feel so at ease. The first appointment was over in 15 minutes including the 2 biopsies they took. There were 2 nurses in the room too and they kept my mind occupied and one of them held my hand. I did look at the screen initially which shows the cervix. But once they applied the solution which changes the abnormal cells to white I chose not to look anymore, partly because I'm pretty squeamish but also because I just wanted to wait for the biopsy results instead of worrying myself because I'm generally quite an anxious person.

I can completely sympathise with the anxiety whilst waiting for results but most are back within 3 weeks, so try to enjoy your Christmas without worrying. If they take a biopsy it doesn't mean they think you have cancer and all these treatments are to prevent the abnormal cells progressing to anything more sinister. If you have any questions about the appointment I'll do my best to answer them from my own experience. I have since had results and a LLETZ treatment 2 weeks to remove the abnormal cells. X
