Are symptoms even a real symptom? Areola appearance!

Hi All I read somewhere that change of appearance is just as important as lumps. So I went to see my GP this Tuesday as my areola on one breast, half of it has changed appearance to be smooth and lighter that the other half and the other breast, its also itchy. Like its worn away?! Has anyone heard of this? I was shocked when my GP said I should see the breast clinic "just to be safe". She said if they think its urgent I will be seen quick, but as they are backed up, if they think non urgent then it will be longer. I am not sure is this is a real symptom or just a thing that happens to breasts? I had a call form the hospital less than 4 hours after my GP sent the referal and a photo and appointment next week. I feel sick and anxious and not sleeping, where as before I saw my GP I never really gave it a thought! I am 49 and not been called up for routine screening yet. Am I over reacting or coudl this be serious or not? I feel very over whelmed. Thanks :)

  • Hiya Dorset bear

I'm waiting to be referred to the breast clinic for similar symptoms. I have flaking on one nipple and stinging behind my nipple. The GP wanted to refer straight away but the referral form stated that I had to be prescribed mometasone ointment (steroid) for 2 weeks before they could refer. My GP is concerned that it is Paget's disease which presents as eczema on the nipple but is cabcerous and often there are underlying tumours in the breast.

I'm glad that your clinic are seeing you urgently, it's the waiting that's difficult isn't it. At least once you get to clinic they do lots of investigations on one day and they are very open about what they think the results might show.

    Finger's crossed for you.

Make sure you look after you. Big hug's. Karen
