Colonoscopy postponed by 10 weeks

Hi everyone,

I was supposed to have a colonoscopy because I've got several symptoms that could either be bowel cancer or IBD/IBS or other. I was waiting 3 weeks for the colonscopy appointment but I was struck down by COVID on the same day I was suposed to have the procedure. Now I was told it was hospital policy that I wait at least 7 weeks before being allowed to enter the hospital and have a colonscopy, despite still having symptoms.

I'm very worried about my potential cancer spreading/getting worse. By the time I get a chance to book the colonoscopy, it will have been 13 weeks since my referral by the GP. and 10 weeks since my colonoscopy appointment was made.

I dont understand why it's mandatory to wait 7 weeks. Am I contagious with COVID for that long? And if I have cancer, how much does this extra 7 week delay affect my outcome? I know this is not a medical forum, but has anyone else been in the same position?

  • Hello TiredofWaiting and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry that you have to wait a minimum of 7 weeks before you can have your colonoscopy. Unfortunately I can't explain why this is but our cancer nurses may be able to help so if you'd like to get their thoughts on this then do give them a call tomorrow on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do what they can to help.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in this position will get back to you soon as well.

    Kind regards,
