Borderline Ovarian Cancer

I'm due to have a laparotomy this friday to remove an 18cm complex ovarian cyst. I've had an MRI which has suggested it is a benign serous cystadenoma. However, the surgeon has said there's a chance it could come back as borderline once it's been sent to pathology. My CA125 was only slightly raised at 46.

I was given the choice of total hysterectomy or just having the one ovary and fallopian tube removed. I've opted for just the ovary/tube removal but have been told if it comes back as borderline I will need a 2nd surgery for a hysterectomy. I'm 43 and don't feel quite ready to go through menopause yet but wondering if I'm making the right choice.

Has anyone been through similar where it's come back as borderline only after surgery?

  • I noticed you've haven't had a reply just yet Garble44 so I just wanted to say hello and let you know your post has been seen.

I think it's only natural to have some niggling doubts, especially when you get closer to the day of your operation, but it sounds like you've thought this through and have come to a decision that's right for you. Hopefully some of our members who have been in this position will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but in the meantime I want to you wish you all the best for Friday and share some information we have about the laparotomy.

I hope this helps but if you have any questions playing on your mind or would just like to talk things through with someone then do give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to support you at this time.

  • Hi! I had my second baby in January and whilst pregnant was diagnosed with cyst which was thought to be benign and simple. I did have another one when pregnant with my first which was benign but grew to 24cms!
Cut a long story short. My cyst was then suspicious after I had an ultrasound 6 weeks post partim and then MRI they were pretty certain it was ovarian cancer but not 100% sure. Very very scary! The docs even went so far in saying it wasn't curable (but treatable).I ended up having a full hysterectomy and after histology the cyst turned out to be a borderline mucinous ovarian tumour. And it's my understanding that these aren't cancerous but they also aren't benign. I had 1 follow up consultation after this and then I was discharged. I'm on HRT and no menopausal symptoms yet. I'm so pleased I had the op and felt my life was saved by the surgery. Very grateful to be here and with 2 lovely beautiful children I feel even more lucky! Good luck with everything. You got this!!
