Core needle biopsy

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone has any experience of this please. I had a core needle biopsy of a lymph node under my arm today, and I'm physically and emotionally quite bruised.

I have had generalised lymphadenopathy for a couple of months now, but with normal blood tests. My GP referred me to the breast screening clinic 3 weeks ago though as she wasn't happy with one of the lymph nodes under my arm.

So I went to the breast clinic today. No mammogram, or any assessment of my breasts apart from a 30 second feel around, but the doctor did send me for an ultrasound of both armpits, which apparently showed enlarged lymph nodes on both sides. The radiologist decided to do a core needle biopsy there and then. Dear god it was uncomfortable! Painful even. He got 2 samples, although he'd originally said he wanted 3, but I think I was looking pretty freaked out by this point so he decided he'd got enough.

I went back to the doctor afterwards and she said I should get the results by mid January. No indication of whether or not I need to worry, but of course I am worried. So now here I am, in quite a lot of pain, so unable to do much with my right arm, a fortnight before my daughter turns 3, facing Xmas worrying about this.

Does anyone else have experience of this? Is this normal?

  • I'm sorry you had quite a tough time with the core needle biopsy Aridia.

As you'll see here, it is quite common for the breast to ache after this procedure and it can take some time to heal but if you're worried do be sure to have another chat with your GP as they will be in the best position to answer your questions and put your mind at ease. They should be able to provide you with some pain relief if you feel you need it as well.

Hopefully some of our members who have had a core needle biopsy will share their experiences and advice with you soon but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about this then do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,
